Rejoicing in Our Fellowship with God
One of the great privileges we have is communion with God through Christ. The Creator of the universe delights in us and wants us to delight in him! Rejoice in this truth today regardless of your circumstances. Consider the words of the apostle John:
"that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ..." 1 John 1:3
"See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure." I John 3:1-3
Some days we don't "feel" or "think" that we are God's children. It's normal because we have promises that have not yet been fulfilled. You are being sanctified, but that work isn't complete. You have the Spirit indwelling you, but you don't see Jesus face-to-face.
John Owen writes concerning this tension:
"This communion will be perfect and complete when we enter into the full enjoyment of the Christ’s glory. Then we shall totally give ourselves up to him resting in him as the ultimate fulfillment of all our desires. This communion is now only partial because we presently only enjoy the first-fruits and dawnings of that future perfection."
I'm asking the Lord that we will, as a church, be anxiously awaiting the day that we see Jesus as he really is. And that we will be enjoying the fruits of our fellowship with him today. Although you can't see it, your fellowship with God is more real than the words you are reading right now. Consider these truths and rejoice.
